Myrrh

The Myrrh tree bestows an energy of reverence for inner reflection. When we are overwhelmed by information and the energy of thoughts, the Myrrh tree evokes silence and simplicity to create a sense of calm.

Myrrh is a deep brown, reddish resin that comes from species of the Commiphora, a shrub like tree from the Burseraceae family, which grows very slowly in dry climates across parts of Asia and Africa, including India, Yemen, Saudi Arabia, Ethiopia and Somalia.

Myrrh is known as one of the oldest medicines in the world. For thousands of years the life of the Arabian myrrh merchant was one of camel caravans crossing barren desert sands, navigating by stars, and following a route between secret water cisterns hidden from roaming thieves. Ancient documents reveal the many cities, such as Petra prospered because of the wealth brought by Myrrh resins for both its fragrant and medical value. Myrrh became prized possessions in the ancient world and was traded with Babylon, Assyria, Egypt, Persia, Rome, Greece, and China. Its alluring dry resinous bitter aroma can be traced back to the temples and queen tombs of the Egyptian Pharaohs where Myrrh was used for incense, perfumes, holy ointments and worn as fragrant charms. Myrrh continues to have an important role in cosmetics and perfumery and in Chinese medicine to treat wounds, relieve painful swelling and respiratory problems. It is the primary ingredient in incense and holy oils used to inspire prayer, deepen meditation, and revitalise the spirit.
