Frankincense Origins

The Frankincense tree (Boswellia carterii), is prized for its medicinal, purifying, and spiritual properties. It is a short shrub, that grows 3-7 meters high across the desert plains and the arid conditions of Yemen, Somalia, Ethiopia, Eritrea and India. It often has an abundance of leaves and blossoms with white or pale pink flowers.

The desert people of East Africa and the Arabian Peninsula have produced and traded frankincense for 5,000 years and continue to do so with stringent government regulations to ensure its conservation and restoration.

Its fragrant perfume and healing qualities are found referenced in numerous Chinese, Greek, Latin and Sanskrit sources used for medicinal, ritual and religious reasons. Frankincense was once was so revered, that it was  exclusively harvested only for royalty. The Egyptians used Frankincense for the embalming processes of mummification and was intended to accompany the Pharaohs into the afterlife. The Israelites of Jerusalem burned Frankincense in their temples to assist with the ancient pathway to prayer. The Roman emperor Nero, was known to have burned an entire year of harvest of frankincense at the funeral of his favourite mistress. It will always be known and remembered as the sacred offering graciously gifted by the three wise men to the newly born Jesus.
